They told me to design clothes instead because I was a woman but then I turned life around

Women in Pakistan have been consistently proving their mettle in all walks of life. The world of business is no exception.
Maheen Rahman, who at the age of 39, is the top money manager in Pakistan. The CEO of Alfalah GHP Investment Management Ltd. in Karachi. Rahman has attracted attention in the business circles for the impressive turnaround of a loss incurring IGI when it was acquired by Alfalah GHP Investment Management back in 2013 and helped it gain 40% in client assets.
With her outstanding achievements, Maheen Rahman is alone with 21 CEOs of rival companies that happen to be men. Being the only female, she acknowledged that she has to still prove to an industry where the position of CEO is still seen a position for experienced men.
A key aspect of Rahman’s life is that her business success did not come at a cost of her family. She manages her work and her home meticulously at the same time. But there have been circumstances that caused her to be away from her kids due to work. However, she makes sure to have lunch with her family every day.
Her remarkable story is a reminder that perceptions need to be changed in terms of the recognition of women for their potential and ability as much as men are appreciated, especially in business sectors dominated by the latter. It should not be a surprise to many that Maheen’s is still routinely asked why she does not design clothes. Being the CEO of one of the largest financial companies of the country, Maheen’s represents that challenges and stereotypes women have to face in Pakistan when it comes to gender equality at the workplace.
She is the most successful CEO in her industryShe has said that people still say to her that she should rather design clothes than bothering with a field that has virtually no women.
But this does not let her down at all. She is not slowing down in her work and has been receiving accolades from the world as well. She was recently named by Fortune Magazine as the ’40 Under 40′ women to watch. Maheen is leading Pakistani women by shattering the glass ceilings that present themselves for women at every step of their way.
